control. From new approaches to improving AI accuracy and productivity to debates over regulation, security, and workforce impact, the latest news underscores that AI is moving from experimentation into a broader phase of business transformation. At the same time, rising concerns about governance, trust, and job displacement show that the technology’s long-term implications remain far from settled.

Pew Research shows that Americans are using AI more often, but trust remains low. A new survey of 5,119 US adults found that only 16% expect AI to benefit society over the next 20 years, while 40% expect it to have a negative impact. Concern remains high even as adoption grows: 67% doubt the government will regulate AI effectively, 59% do not trust companies to build it safely, and about two-thirds believe AI development is moving too fast. Still, half of Americans are using chatbots, with ChatGPT leading at 44% and Claude far behind at 6%.

OpenRouter has launched Fusion, a new tool designed to combine the strengths of multiple AI models and deliver stronger results than a single frontier model. Fusion sends prompts through several leading models, compares their responses, identifies areas of agreement, contradictions, and blind spots, and then produces one more complete answer. OpenRouter says this multi-model approach “significantly outperforms” any individual frontier model, positioning Fusion as a more robust way to improve accuracy, depth, and reliability.

Microsoft is making Copilot Cowork generally available to Microsoft 365 users worldwide. The new agentic workplace tool is designed to support productivity tasks while giving companies more control over model selection, usage-based billing, and cost management. Microsoft also claims Copilot Cowork runs 30% to 40% cheaper per prompt than Anthropic’s Claude Cowork, making price efficiency a central part of its enterprise AI pitch.

Anthropic is facing pushback from cybersecurity experts after the government’s recent export control on its most powerful models, Claude Mythos and Claude Fable. A group of 76 security veterans signed an open letter arguing that the ban removes some of the strongest available tools from defenders. They also warn that the vulnerability behind the restriction can be reproduced on other frontier models, raising questions about whether the ban solves the core security problem or simply limits access to advanced defensive capabilities.

TrueUp reports that technology companies have cut nearly 150,000 jobs across about 363 layoff rounds this year, equal to roughly 974 people per day and 44% faster than last year’s pace. Last month alone brought nearly 40,000 cuts, the worst single month in two years. Challenger, Gray & Christmas says AI was the most-cited reason for layoffs across every industry for the third month in a row. Still, skeptics argue that AI may also be serving as a convenient explanation for broader cost-cutting. Meta, for example, cut 8,000 workers in May, about 10% of its workforce.

Why this news is important to CFOs and their teams:

These developments reinforce that AI is no longer just a technology discussion, as it is becoming a strategic business issue. Organizations must balance the opportunities for productivity gains, lower operating costs, and improved decision-making against growing concerns around governance, security, regulatory uncertainty, and workforce planning. As AI adoption accelerates across enterprises, finance teams will play a central role in evaluating ROI, managing risk, controlling costs, and ensuring that AI investments align with long-term business objectives.
