Gustavo’s Corner:  AI News for CFOs - #12

This edition highlights how the AI race is shifting from headline model launches to practical scale, deeper personalization, and sharper commercial focus. Google is widening access to personalized AI, OpenAI is pushing smaller enterprise-ready models, Anthropic is expanding usage and long-context capacity, xAI is facing execution pressure, and Microsoft is moving AI further into sensitive real-world workflows like healthcare.

Gemini rolls out Personal Intelligence to all U.S. users, connecting Gemini with Gmail, Photos, Search, and YouTube to deliver far more personalized answers. Think restaurant recommendations shaped by your past reservations, preferences, and activity. First introduced in January, the feature had been limited to paid accounts, but it is now available free to all U.S. users. It remains off by default and only activates through explicit opt-in.

OpenAI announces GPT-5.4 mini and nano as it sharpens its focus on coding and enterprise. These new models are OpenAI’s strongest small models so far, bringing much of GPT-5.4’s capability into lighter, more efficient versions built for scale and higher-volume use. The launch comes as Applications CEO Fidji Simo reportedly told employees that OpenAI will deprioritize “side projects” and concentrate more heavily on coding and enterprise tools, a move that closely echoes Anthropic’s strategy.

Anthropic doubles Claude’s usage limits for two weeks and makes its 1M context window generally available. The temporary increase applies across Free, Pro, Max, and Team plans outside peak hours, specifically weekdays from 5am to 11am PST, and users do not need to do anything to receive the extra capacity. Anthropic is applying the bonus automatically across Claude tools. Separately, the company announced that the full 1M-token context window is now generally available for Claude Opus 4.6 and Sonnet 4.6 with no price increase, allowing users to upload larger media files into chats.

xAI is being rebuilt from the ground up, according to Elon Musk, who admitted the company “was not built right” as it struggles to keep pace with competitors. The comment comes amid a wave of recent departures from the startup, including co-founders Tony Wu, Igor Babuschkin, Kyle Kosic, and Christian Szegedy. The timing adds pressure, especially as SpaceX, which now owns xAI, is reportedly preparing for a public offering sometime this year.

Microsoft unveils Copilot Health, a new AI tool inside the Copilot app designed to bring medical records and wearable data into one clearer, more connected health story. The product helps users interpret information from sources such as visit summaries, medications, lab results, and health apps. Microsoft says the tool can pull data from more than 50 wearable devices and 50,000 hospitals and providers. The company also says this health data is siloed from the broader Copilot app, protected with encryption, and will not be used to train models.

Why this news is important to CFOs and their teams:

The market is maturing in ways that directly affect cost, governance, vendor selection, and productivity strategy. Smaller and more efficient models can reduce deployment costs, larger context windows can improve document-heavy finance work, and personalized AI raises new questions around data access, privacy, and control. At the same time, leadership changes and execution issues at major AI firms are a reminder that CFOs should evaluate not only innovation, but also vendor stability, security posture, and long-term enterprise fit before scaling AI across the organization.
