Refined AI News for CFOs

AI is moving quickly from standalone tools into a more connected layer of everyday work. OpenAI, Microsoft, Anthropic, and SpaceXAI are improving speed, memory, browser integration, and model economics, while new transparency requirements are making AI governance more important. At the same time, PwC’s found that AI skills are rapidly becoming a premium capability in financial services, with direct implications for hiring, workforce structure, and the future of entry-level finance roles.

ChatGPT can now remember what you worked on yesterday and use that activity as context for more relevant answers. Its new Computer History feature turns recent computer activity into usable context, while completed tasks can also be referenced and converted into repeatable skills. Separately, OpenAI has introduced an Ultrafast mode for GPT-5.6 Sol, delivering up to 14x its normal speed and initially rolling out to a limited group of companies.

Microsoft Copilot is being simplified ahead of a major new release. Microsoft is merging its consumer and business Copilot apps into a single experience while removing Group Chats, Podcasts, Deep Research, Copilot Labs, and Mico. The redesign gives Microsoft a cleaner foundation for its upcoming Copilot “super app,” which is expected by the end of September.

Anthropic Claude in Chrome is evolving from a browser side panel into a full Cowork session. Conversations are now saved to account history, while existing skills and connectors work directly in the browser without additional setup. Sessions are tied to the account rather than the device, allowing users to start a task in a browser tab and continue it later in the desktop app. Max and Team customers get access first, with Pro users following soon. Anthropic also highlights prompt injection as the main security risk, since websites can hide instructions designed to redirect the agent.

SpaceXAI Grok 4.6 arrived just one day after the launch of Grok Bot, positioning the model as a frontier-level option for knowledge work and coding. Grok 4.6 matches OpenAI’s GPT-5.6 Sol on the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index and trails only Claude Opus 5 and Fable 5. Its main commercial advantage is cost: the price per task remains unchanged from Grok 4.5 and is comparable with lower-cost open-weight Chinese models.

Anthropic Claude now embeds invisible watermarks in text generated by models launched on or after August 2, aligning with the EU AI Act transparency code. The rules require machine-readable identification of AI-generated content, with potential fines of up to €15 million or 3% of global revenue. Anthropic is applying the marks worldwide and is also signing generated image files with C2PA metadata. The company cautions that the watermark does not prove authorship, since Claude can also edit, translate, or rewrite human-created text — a distinction that could become important for employers, educators, and compliance teams interpreting watermark results.

PwC found a major shift in how financial services companies value AI skills after surveying more than 1,000 US executives. Some 86% said AI skills training can be more valuable than an MBA for many new hires, while 91% said they already pay more for candidates with AI capabilities. Another 58% are willing to pay a premium for AI fluency, and nearly eight in ten expect their workforce to shrink by at least 20% over the next five years, with entry-level roles facing the greatest pressure.

Why this news is important to CFOs and their teams:

These developments show that AI is becoming both a productivity platform and a workforce strategy issue. Faster models, persistent context, browser-based agents, and lower-cost alternatives can improve finance processes and decision-making, but they also introduce new questions around security, compliance, AI-generated content, and governance. Just as importantly, the growing premium on AI skills suggests that finance leaders will need to rethink hiring, training, and team design as AI becomes embedded in everyday financial work.
